Brand Makeover for Family Owned Business

Nostalgic New Packaging for Ohio Based Bakery

Project Overview:

–  Concept Ideation          –  Creative Direction
–  Art Direction                  –  Visual Design
–  Production Design        –  Project Management

Butter Maid Bakery in Boardman, Ohio, recently found themselves in need of a fresh new look for their flagship product—the ever popular Kolachi Roll.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, our collaboration kicked off in October of 2016. A very informative conversation with their director of marketing revealed the history of the brand; which has been family owned since 1955. My design strategy was to take what I had learned during discovery stage, and incorporate their story directly into the packaging.

The challenge faced in the preliminary stages of ideation was in capturing the essence of Butter Maid in a way that connected with their existing customers, while also having approachability to new markets. Really looking to tell a story, I aimed to offer a solution that featured a classic, retro feel with a contemporary vibe.

The new packaging captures that story, and includes original family photography, a 1950’s style pattern, and hand tailored lettering for each of the 13 unique flavor profiles.

This project was successfully completed within two weeks from start date, and resulted in an extremely happy client and an even happier art director, with a belly full of free kolachi rolls. Thanks Butter Maid!!!
